National Field School

Planning for the 2018 NIFTI National Field School is underway! The Field School will be held in Denver in November. More information soon.

In its sixth year, the NIFTI National Field School supported professional development and network building for 92 Incubator Farm Project staff from across the country. The Field School was structured around interactive workshops, facilitated resource review sessions and regional networking and goal-setting opportunities. A farm tour of the Agriculture and Land Based Training Association introduced participants to the work of one of the oldest incubator projects in the United States.

Workshops, discussion sessions, and resource development focused on:

• Land Management
• Curriculum Design
• Evaluation
• Market Channel Development
• Incubators in Local/Regional Food Systems
• Staff Capacity
• Financial Literacy & Business Planning
• Working with Socially Disadvantaged Farmers
• Access to Land
• Cooperative Farming Models
• Recruiting Appropriate and Ready Applicants
• Communication/Conflict Resolution
• Supporting Farmer/Mentor Relationships

Collaboration with ISED Solutions allowed for the inclusion of workshops led by and designed for refugee serving incubator projects. A pre-conference for refugee serving projects included sessions focused on resource sharing and network building.

What people are saying about the NIFTI National Field School:

“Really excellent - well planned -well executed - and a lot of fun!”

“This is the premier professional development event that I attend annually. There really isn't anything else out there that I've participated in that so closely speaks to my work and the goal of farmer development.”

“It is definitely my favorite conference that I attend each year!”

“Honestly, this is the best professional development event that I have attended. It was most relevant and constructive to the very uniqueness of an incubator farm project - which isn't just about crop production or marketing (like you see at most other conferences), but an entire sphere in itself.”

“There was a very positive and communal vibe to these professionals coming together. This sets the Field School apart, the willingness and desire to learn from each other.”
