Join us for an evening insect safari! Scout the dark for moths, caterpillars, and other night-flying pollinators, glowing under UV Blacklight right on the farm.
Pollinators work the night shift too! Moths and their caterpillars pollinate crops and native plants after dark, alongside bees and other animals by day. Spend an evening with a blacklight and a sheet, and see who shows up - from hawkmoths to underwings - and learn why protecting their habitat helps protect our harvests and wild landscapes too. The later you stay, the more you can see! Ecology lesson provided by Lepidopterist Teá Montagna and New Entry staff.
What to Expect
- Exciting evening learning about nighttime pollinators with science experts.
- Bring patience and curiosity, we do not know what we will see or discover, but we will learn a lot!
- The farm will be dark and roads are not LIT, perfect for viewing a lot of nighttime flying insects attracted by UV light.
- The farm roads are uneven and nighttime has limited visibility, so expect rough walking conditions
- Bathroom facilities are limited to 2 well maintained portable toilets and outdoor sinks.
Cost Details
Suggested donation of $7 per person. Donations support New Entry's work training the next generation of farmers. No one is turned away - if the donation is not possible right now, register anyway. We want every neighbor at the lamp! The event is capped at 45 participants.
Food & Beverages
We will provide water for participants, but consider bringing a reusable water bottle.
Rules
- This is an event for ages 11+, not young children. Bring curious grownups, teens, and tweens.
- All guests must stay within designated areas on the property for their safety and to protect what farmers are growing. No one should go into buildings or on farm plots without a staff member.
- Pet policy: While we are a bunch of animal lovers here, unfortunately no pets are allowed on the premises.
- Items You May Want to Bring: Items to stay comfortable outside (ex. warm jacket), shoes you are comfortable in for walking on uneven ground in, bug spray, and a flashlight.
- Leave at Home: Speakers, alcohol, pets
- Photo & Video Release Consent: By attending this event, you hereby give consent to New Entry Sustainable Farming Project to photograph, film, videotape and then use, reproduce, and publish said images or you and/or your children. You agree that photographs/negatives, film, or videotapes thereof shall constitute the sole property of New Entry Sustainable Farming Project, with full right of disposition in any manner whatsoever, including posting to the organization's website, social media accounts, or including in other communications. You hereby release New Entry Sustainable Farming Project and the organization's legal representatives and assigns from any and all claims whatsoever in connection with the use, reproduction, and publication of the images thereof.

Driving & Parking Directions
There are several driveway entrances onto the property* – each leading to a different entity/location, including other organizations' barns, so it is important that you use New Entry’s designated driveway to help maintain our neighborly relations and end up in the right spot.
If you are driving along Cabot Street, you will start to see signs for Moraine Farm, keep driving! Our entrance is further down the street (across from houses on Cabot Street numbered 794 and 774). There is a red fire hydrant just before our driveway entrance, and a large white sign at the driveways entrance that says, "New Entry."
Follow the long driveway around the farm, along the fence. You'll pass the big red historic barn on your right. Continue following signs to our designated parking area that's in front of the brown Ag Barn.
Parking is only allowed in our designated gravel area, not in front of any of the buildings.
WE WILL MEET AT THE BROWN AG BARN.
Please note: This is a working farm property with unpaved paths.
