Farm Financial Benchmarking Report

This project centered farmers engaged in diversified vegetable production and direct-to-consumer marketing, including many beginning farmers and participants in incubator farm training programs. These producers face distinct challenges: limited access to capital, low profit margins, high labor demands, limited economies of scale, and barriers to financial literacy. Benchmark data offers a valuable reference point, enabling farmers to compare expenses, gross margins, debt ratios, and net income with peer operations. The goal is to highlight examples of farm business growth and outline realistic pathways to profitability as producers scale their operations.

A total of 37 farmers participated in the benchmarking project, but only 13 farmers every quarterly and each annual intake
survey. Farmers in the project represented a diverse cross section of small-scale, diversified vegetable operations, with farm sizes ranging from 0.1 to 7 acres. Geographically, participants were located across 14 states, including California, Hawaii, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, Colorado, and Washington State, among others. Most farms were engaged in direct-to-consumer sales models such as Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), farmers markets, and farm stands. The majority of participants identified as beginning or underserved and a significant portion were current members of farm incubator programs.
